What Is Intersectionality & Disability?
Intersectionality and Disability is a crucial topic that delves into the complex ways in which various forms of social stratification, such as disability, race, gender, and class, intersect and overlap. Understanding this intersectionality is vital because people often experience multiple forms of marginalization simultaneously. For example, a disabled woman of color may face not just ableism, but also sexism and racism. These intersecting forms of discrimination can create unique challenges that are not well understood when each category is considered in isolation. By adopting an intersectional lens, we can better understand the multifaceted experiences of disabled individuals and create more effective, inclusive policies and interventions. This approach allows us to address the root causes of inequality and exclusion, rather than merely treating their symptoms.
