Joshin supports World Autism Month

April is World Autism Month, a time when we come together to increase global understanding and acceptance of people with Autism. During this month, we link hands with friends and neighbors to raise awareness and support inclusiveness. Joshin is honored to partner this month with Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM) to support these initiatives.

Facts about Autism

In 2013, the American Psychological Association merged four distinct autism diagnoses - autistic disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger syndrome into one umbrella diagnosis of ASD. According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 59 children in the United States is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In spite of the prevalence of ASD, there is much work to do to improve awareness and understanding.

If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism. - Dr. Stephen Shore

Autism has many subtypes and people with Autism have different needs and challenges. Some people with ASD may require a great deal of support in their day-to-day lives while others may require none.

Signs of ASD appear by age 2 or 3 and early intervention has a dramatic impact on learning, social development and brain development. AuSM has a resource section to connect you with counseling and consulting services.

What you can do

During the month of April, we encourage you to share posts from Joshin and AuSM in support of autism awareness. There are also a number of fun activities such as the Timberwolves Autism Awareness Game with AuSM on April 7. The proceeds benefit AuSM.
